Mariko is a high school student. She likes studying English, and she is very interested in America. Last summer she went to Illinois to study English. She stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Brown for four weeks.
When Mariko arrived at their home, Mrs. Brown said to her, “This is your home in America, Mariko. There is some food in the kitchen. If you are hungry, go to the kitchen and cat something.” Mariko didn’t think it was good to go into the kitchen and eat Mr. and Mrs. Brown’s food on the first day. She was very hungry then, and she wanted to eat something, but she couldn’t.
In the evening, Mrs. Brown was making dinner in the kitchen, and looked very busy. Mariko was reading a book in her room. Then Mrs. Brown said to her, “( B )” Mariko was surprised, but she answered, “Sure. I’m coming.” She found that they treated her like a member of their family.
One day Mariko was invited to Kate’s home for lunch. Kate lived near Mr. and Mrs. Brown’s house. Mariko enjoyed the lunch and ate too much. After lunch, Kate said to her, “Would you like some cake? My mother made it for you.” Mariko didn’t want to eat anything, but she couldn’t tell it to her and said, “( C )” Then Kate’s mother said to Mariko, “Would you like some coffee?” Mariko didn’t like coffee, but she couldn’t say, “( D )” She tried to eat the cake and drink coffee, but she couldn’t. Soon Kate found that she didn’t eat any cake or drink any coffee and said, “Mariko, if you don’t want them, please say so. You should say ‘No’ when you have to say it. It is important for us to say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ clearly. If you don’t say what you want to do or what you don’t want to do , you won’t enjoy your life here.” “Oh, I see. I’ll try it,” said Mariko.
When you go to a foreign country, you will find some new things that you don’t know in your country. Mariko has found that people in America say “Yes” or “No” clearly. In foreign countries, it is important to learn different customs. If you learn more about them, you will know foreign countries and your own country better.
